I have been perplexed by signs posted on the stoops along one quiet block in Midtown, 39th Street between Madison and Park. They say, “No sentarse en la escalara por favor. Gracias.” They are just along that one block, including at the purple-bannered Williams Club, a snooty private alumni club.I just realized, however, that the Consulate General of Mexico is also on this block. God forbid they have Mexicans sitting on their precious steps. May I sit on your stairs if I promise not to speak Spanish?
