Growing up, all fire season (which in the California foothills is looong!) we'd always have on the scanner of police, fire, and other emergency transmissions. This way, if there was a vegetation fire that broke out near you, you'd know before they came to knock on your door to boot you out. We had no local TV news (still don't) and not really much radio. Of course no Internet, either. The scanner was it.
Now, the Jesusita fire has the Red Cross and concerned citizens tweeting about it, constant web updates from local news sources, online community bulletin boards where people can share information, and ever-more-amazing satellite maps like this one!
And I'm sure someone must be live blogging it. (Besides me, from 3,000 miles away.)
P.S. I know like 95% of my readers couldn't care less about this fire, but please bear with me.

Like always, a fire team from here has gone to Santa Barbara. The husband of a friend of mine is the fire captain for the team and he says he hasn't seen many fires as bad as this one. Fingers crossed for all those people.
