It’s worth it to remember—and to examine

I’m going to post a link to a story here that maybe not everyone should click through to, because it involves an image that evokes feelings beyond words, and it might not be something you want to see. It’s a story in Esquire about the photo known as “Falling Man,” an image of a man who jumped from the North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001 and has never been identified. The image ran in several newspapers and then never again, as Americans decided that truth of this nature from that day was just too much for them.

It’s a hard thing to look at, but the story is incredibly absorbing, well-reported, and well-written, covering the photographer’s process, the search for the identity of the man, and the larger issue of voyeurism versus reportage.
